Case study #3: Versatile counter mounting system for Point of Sale Peripherals

Client Brief

Develop a low-cost versatile mounting system for one or two full-screen point of sale terminal displays and associated peripherals such as customer activated PIN pad, or simple weighscale indicator.

As well as providing a mount point for each of the peripherals, the system should also incorporate cable management to hide interconnects.

The system should also have as small a footprint as possible being raised about the counter-top to provide maximum area for merchandise folding and packing.

Outcome

In conjunction with a specialist metal fabricator in the Far East, Storemax have developed a system based on a central pole with a variety of radially connected arms. Each of these arms can be positioned and locked anywhere around the central column to orientate the peripheral either towards the operator, or the customer.

A variety of peripheral mounts have also been developed to support the attachment of 75mm or 100mm VESA compliant displays, traditional 2x20 VF display or specialist indicators. To accommodate a whole range of PIN pads and EFT devices, a variable width clamping tray has also been incorporated into the range. A printer tray can also be configured.

All cabling is routed through the radial arms and central pole with enough clearance for almost all common plugs and sockets encountered in retail.

Attachment to the counter surface is via a single hole for fast fixing and simple assembly (the circular based plate shown in the picture is just to illustrate the demonstration system and is not part of the product). In use the peripherals are positioned above the surface of the counter leaving a clear space for merchandise packing, or transaction paperwork.

Since its release the systems has been widely deployed in speciality retail including variety stores and a chain of high-street telecommunications sales outlets.
