Case StudY #1: Compact point of sale controller

Client Brief

Storemax were asked by a Tier 1 Systems Integration company to take on the development of a low-cost PoS controller to meet the requirements of the European market.

Key to this development were compact size; rich connectivity for legacy serial connected peripherals; a full complement of powered and non-powered USB ports, along with support for a range of processors to offer clients a balance of performance and low-power consumption.

Outcome

A new controller was designed based on Intel mobile technology to provide low-power, low heat system with the flexibility to accommodate a range of processors from Intel Celeron to Core 2 Duo. Support for two independent screens was incorporated to enable provide a rich customer experience and enable the retailer to show promotional information, as well as normal transaction data. Powered USB and Serial ports providing +5V, +12V and +24V enable a full set of retail peripherals to be directly connected without the need for additional power supplies. This reduces costs, eases installation and improves reliability.

With a footprint of just 275mm W x 280mm D x 95mm H, along with the ability for vertical mounting, the new controller can be easily accommodated in almost any supermarket checkout or beneath the smallest counter.

Once pre-production units were available, Storemax managed the regulatory approvals for the US, Europe and China.

Storemax have subsequently been responsible for managing production and logistics for the units, including customer-specific configuration and software load.

Since release more than 100,000 units have been sold.
